EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION

Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo, well known as “Farmaajo” was born on May 11, 1962, in the capital city Mogadishu, Somalia. Farmaajo’s upbringing was deeply influenced by his parents. Farmaajo’s father, an active participant in the independence movement, continued his dedication to public service post-independence, serving as a civil servant in the national Department of Transportation during the 1970s. His father’s unwavering commitment to duty and public service influenced Farmaajo, instilling in him a profound sense of duty and a conviction to serve his country.

EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION

He attended primary school at 1st Luuliyo Primary School and Lafoole Technical School. Farmaajo pursued his education diligently, earning degree in History and Political Science and later furthered his academic pursuit by obtaining a Master’s degree in Liberal Studies from the University of Buffalo, New York. In 1982, Farmaajo started his professional career in administrative positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Somalia. He was assigned to work at the Somali Embassy in Washington, D.C. in 1985, marking the beginning of his diplomatic career in the United States.

BEFORE POLITICS

In his early career, Farmaajo served as an Equal Opportunity Compliance Officer at the New York Department of Transportation from 1995 to 2000. He led initiatives promoting diversity and inclusion, ensuring compliance with regulations while advocating for workplace equality. Throughout his tenure, Farmaajo demonstrated a strong commitment to public service, serving as an at-large Commissioner for the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority and as a case manager for a lead abatement program. He also worked as a minority business coordinator, furthering his dedication to advancing equity and opportunity.

Farmaajo’s community support and advocacy laid a foundation for his subsequent political endeavors in Somalia, reflecting his unwavering commitment to societal progress and fairness.

PRIME MINISTER

During his tenure as Prime Minister of Somalia, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo navigated the complex political landscape of Somalia; grappling with internal strife and external threats. Appointed on October 14, 2010, Farmaajo swiftly garnered parliamentary approval and a vote of confidence in his leadership. From the onset, Farmaajo prioritized security coordination, convening crucial meetings with military officials and AMISOM forces to strategize against the threat of Al-Shabaab. His administration, in partnership with AMISOM, launched offensives to reclaim control of parts of Benadir.

Despite successes, disagreements surfaced between Prime Minister Farmaajo and Parliament spokesperson Sharif Hassan Sheikh, highlighting underlying tensions within Somalia’s complex political landscape. On June 19, 2011, Farmaajo made the difficult decision to resign from his position. His resignation, grounded in prioritizing the interests of Somalia and its people, underscored Farmaajo’s commitment to serving Somalia’s greater good above personal ambition or political maneuvering. Farmaajo’s Prime Ministership, though brief, left an indelible mark on Somalia’s political trajectory. His proactive approach to security and unwavering dedication to the nation’s welfare exemplified his leadership character.

Farmaajo’s presidency, spanning from 2017 to 2022, was a beacon of hope, marked by significant achievements and progress. Farmaajo’s ascent to power was met with widespread optimism. His election by the Somali Parliament was celebrated across the nation.

National security was a top priority for Farmaajo’s administration. Recognizing the existential threat posed by al-Shabaab, he spearheaded efforts to reform, rebuild, and strengthen the Somali National Army (SNA). Military operations against al-Shabaab were intensified, with international partners providing crucial support.

Farmaajo’s government made significant strides in strengthening federal institutions and improving governance. Corruption was tackled head-on through reforms that enhanced transparency and accountability. Technocrats were appointed to key positions, ensuring a more efficient and honest administration. The judiciary was strengthened, promoting the rule of law and judicial independence. Fiscal reforms led to increased domestic revenue collection and a bolstered national budget.

Mohamed is a Member of Parliament and is married to Saynab Abdi Moallim, they have four children: two daughters and two sons.
